After another four hours, Tai had decided that old Tak was terrible and she never wanted to see a powered vehicle again. She was stiff from the sitting, and she ached to get out and take a piss and shoot something with her bow. Noah was right. She did miss hunting.

The ground had grown hilly, and the trucks labored. Finally, the lead truck stopped, and one of the men came to the window of their truck.

“We’re here,” he said.

Tai was the first to disembark, glad to be rid of the contraptions. Two of the premier assassins that she knew from the academy took the lead. Both of them were know-it-alls who didn’t like to take orders in the practice rings. Tai had also bested both of them, even though she was four years younger. They didn’t like her.

Father Seelah joined the man who had declared they’d arrived, and they shared a conversation that involved pointing at two peaks off in the distance, perhaps two miles ahead. Unlike the other barren peaks around them, these seemed to have vegetation beginning to grow on their slopes.

Tai crept forward through the suddenly thick underbrush. Those with her had their guns, but she preferred to keep her bow handy. For now, she still thought it her best weapon. She didn’t like the guns that the others used. She didn’t trust them.

And, frankly, she wasn’t sure they were fair. That sounded silly, but what was the point in singing songs of warriors and training men and women to be of great spiritual stature in the school and academies if anyone with a weapon could kill another, friend or foe, with the flick of a finger?

Noah slid up next to her, a rifle under his shoulder. He claimed to know how to use it, but Tai knew Noah well enough to know that he’d overestimate himself. It was a gift, in a way – he was fearless – but it was also a curse. He was fearless when he should be fearful, bold when he should be measured. Not that Tai was thought of much differently by her peers.

“We should wait,” she said to Noah.

“If Will is in there, we have to get to him,” he said.

Tai had a flashback moment to when they’d done this just six short months ago. Back then, Noah had barely known what he was doing, but he’d known enough to use his status as the Healer to force Seelah to act on his behalf. But Tai hadn’t needed to be forced. She’d done so willingly. She would have done anything for the Healer.

But now he was just Noah. And no offense to Noah, but he was an idiot. “That list gave us these coordinates and invited us here. We can’t just march up there and knock on the door.”

“But Will—”

“I love Will,” Tai said, a little surprised at herself for the way that sounded. “I love Will like my own brother,” she added. “I want to save him. But we have to be smart about it.
